Introducing New URWERK UR-100V Time and Culture II

A limited edition timepiece in a beautiful blue color, inspired by the motifs of the Mesopotamian civilization

URWERK is known for its unique and often futuristic watch designs. The brand gets attention as it showcases a wandering hours display that rotates to indicate the time. Instead of traditional hands, this display is a standout feature, offering a unique way to read the time, taking its inspiration from a variety of sources, including science fiction, space, and nature. The UR-120 Space Black edition, in particular, draws inspiration from space and features a sleek black case, and a notable timepiece, The “Stardust” edition, featuring a diamond-set steel case reminiscent of a starry night.

UR-100V Time and Culture I

Last year, the brand released the UR-100V Time and Culture Line, drawing inspiration from Aztec art and introducing the UR-100V Time and Culture I. The watch is shielded by a cover referred to as the “Blende,” adorned with the “Sun Stone” motif, which showcases a portion of the watch’s inner mechanisms.

Now, URWERK immerses itself in the heart of Mesopotamian civilization, south-central of Iraq, deeply into the ancient city of Ur, the wellspring of its creative inspiration, and Introduces the UR-100V Time and Culture II, also known as “Sumer”. In 3000 BC, the ancient Sumerians of Ur established the world’s earliest unit of time, thus laying the foundational cornerstone for contemporary time measurement. Their golden number was 60, signifying both 60 seconds and 60 minutes.

The “Sumer” is protected by a sapphire crystal, featuring ancient motifs, and pays tribute to the lapis lazuli gemstone with a blue color of choice. At its center, you can observe a four-pointed sun symbolizing the cardinal directions, while between the lugs, the Moon is positioned. These designs exhibit precision, with finely detailed and laser-engraved lines. The motif’s contours are satin-brushed, while the hollows are micro-sandblasted, resulting in a luxurious texture that pays homage to URWERK’s rich heritage, and the base of its identity.

The middle case is constructed from steel and shares identical dimensions with the first Time and Culture timepiece, measuring 41mm in diameter, 14mm in thickness, and having a lug-to-lug distance of 49.7mm. It features a titanium case back and offers water resistance up to 30 meters.

On the watchs face, hours and kilometers share equal importance and value on the scale,  displaying both hours and minutes while also providing information about the Earth’s rotation. After the 60th minute, the minute’s hand transforms into a kilometer counter, symbolizing the 477.29 kilometers traveled by an inhabitant of Ur every 20 minutes due to the Earth’s rotation. This concept beautifully represents the silent journey enabled by the Earth’s rotation. On the other end of the scale, you have the Earth’s revolution around the sun, equivalent to 35,742 kilometers in 20 minutes.

The watch is powered by the Selfwinding UR 12.02 movement governed by a Windfänger airscrew, operating at 28,800 vph (4Hz), and offering 48 hours of power reserve, featuring Aluminum wandering hours on beryllium-bronze Geneva crosses, and Circular graining finishes.

The watch is paired with a black Baltimora strap that is secured by a pin buckle, limited to 30 pieces and priced at CHF 72,000 which is equivalent to AED 295,000.
